ICAR – Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research
Realizing the importance of onion and garlic in the country, ICAR established National Research Centre for Onion and Garlic in VIII Plan with its headquarter at Nasik in 1994. The mission was “To promote overall growth of onion and garlic in terms of enhancement of quality production, export and processing. However, due to some working constraints, the Centre was shifted to Rajgurunagar on 16 June 1998. Over years, the centre has created better facilities for field and laboratories. The centre has been upgraded to Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research in December 2008. It also has an All-India Network Research Project on Onion & Garlic with 25 participating centres all over the country.
Dr. Major Singh, Director, ICAR- Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research, Rajgurunagar, Pune, Maharashtra has played a significant role in supporting the farmers associated with Agrimitra Farmers Producer Company Limited.
Under the guidance of Dr. Amarjeet Gupta, Principal Scientist, DOGR quality seeds and technical guidance were provided to the farmers in the last couple of years. Farmers were happy as the yield was almost doubled with less input cost. Approximately, 200 farmers associated with Agrimitra Farmers Producer Company are benefitted by the support provided by Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research.
Presently, farmers are able to produce 100 – 120 quintal of onion per acre of land. The variety of seeds provided by Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research are mentioned below:
Khariff Variety – Bheema Super, Bheema Dark red
Rabi Variety – Bheema Kiran, Bheema Shakti, Bheema Light Red
Farmers Seminar on Scientific Cultivation of Onion in Mirzapur “Kisan Sangosthi” was organized by Agrimitra Farmer Producer Company, Mirzapur with support from ICAR-Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research, Pune and G. K. Research and Development Foundation, Varanasi in the premises of Saraswati Shishu Mandir at Purushottampur in Narayanpur block of Mirzapur (UP) on 12th March 2021.
The Chief Guest Dr. Gautam Kalloo praised the farmers of Mirzapur for their appreciative work related to security of food, nutrition, health, employment and leading in adoption of new agricultural technologies. Dr. Kalloo appreciated the efforts of ICAR-DOGR taken in technology development on onion and garlic and transfer in the country.
The special guest of the programme, Dr. Major Singh, Director, ICAR-DOGR, Pune said that the area has immense potential for kharif onion cultivation. Dr. Singh assured farmers that the Directorate will continue to support onion cultivation in Mirzapur and other suitable areas.
Dr. Amar Jeet Gupta, Principal Scientist, ICAR-DOGR & Coordinator of Kisan Sangosthi, emphasized on the current situation of onion cultivation as well as livelihood security of farmers through commercial cultivation of kharif onion. Dr. Gupta also appreciated the farmers for adoption and their active involvement in cultivation of onion in Chunar Tahsil of Mirzapur. The production and productivity of onion in Mirzapur have remarkably increased by 93% and 32%, respectively after intervention of ICAR-DOGR technologies in collaboration with Agrimitra and GKRDF.
